Lay Summary

The CoVaRR-Net Wastewater Surveillance Research Group will support national and international research projects for the development and evaluation of wastewater testing and surveillance. The focus of international research will be low- and middle-income countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, and South Asia. We will use a multidisciplinary, consensus approach to establish best practices for wastewater testing and surveillance.

The Public Health and Environmental Surveillance Open Data Model (PHES-ODM) for wastewater, developed by CoVaRR-Net, has been adopted by 27 countries. The goal is to make it the de facto international standard for sharing detailed wastewater and environmental data between researchers and surveillance programs.

International collaborating bodies include, among others, the World Bank in Latin America and the Caribbean, the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the European Union Joint Research Centre, and the Wastewater Sphere. This project will also focus on supporting and expanding this further in the international community, providing guidance on how the Model can support low- and middle-income countries.
